Lubbock Earthquake!

There was a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Oklahoma a few days ago. I was at my studio in Lubbock Texas, on the 13th floor of my building, and I felt the building start to shake for about 40 seconds. It made me a little seasick and the vertical blinds swung back and forth wildly. At first I thought it was the wind, till I realized there WAS NO WIND!

Moments later, life was back to normal…

Khaki man – Mall sketches

This old guy was so adorable. We found him at the mall. I wanted to keep the colors quick, this was about 30 minutes. Playing with some new PS brushes my friend Brandon gave me. Definitely makes things quicker and smoother. I’m having a lot of fun with it.

Space Monkeys

Professor Tilde – Ad

This is a quick commission I did a few weeks ago for a play (I think). It was fun designing the different characters. Must be one crazy play with all of them mixed in there. I tried doing a search for the play to post a link, but i couldn’t find anything about it. I believe the play is in Uvalde, Tx.

The pirate was my favorite. I am really trying to push the silhouette in all of my characters these days. It really adds to the storytelling when you can read a characters design/what they’re doing/etc without having to look too hard.

The Adventures of Kate Beaton's lost comic

I Love Kate Beaton’s comics! And you should too! I am totally inspired by her ability to quickly jot out little stories and make them so immensely entertaining. Her love and passion for History is equally inspiring. Go to her site now and read everything she does. You won’t regret it. This comic is my take on the sad story of her lost comic. This is how I imagine it went down. Its also partially referencing one of her other short comics about a little girl that lost her balloons. I now want to draw lots of short sketchy comics.

Cartooning

My freelance work the past few months has presented me the opportunity to develop my cartooning style a lot more. I am really enjoying it. The best part is that it comes out of desperation in a way. I have so much on my plate these days as far as projects go, that I don’t have time to over-think the work like I once did. I’ve got roughly 30 minutes to an hour to finish each panel and move on to the next in order to meet deadlines, and squeeze in other projects. Its a great way to learn. I love the challenge of having to boil down the storytelling to its simplest details, and still add in a twist of humor. The writers I’m working on are great at pushing that aspect of the story.

One project from a few months back, involved doing illustrations for a business article. These are a few of my favorite clips from that. Completely out of context and without dialogue of course. When the article hits the stands I’ll post about it here. Till then you can enjoy these shots.
