Southwest Airlines caricature

southwest airlines caricature

Last year was the 35th anniversary for Southwest Airlines. My favorite airlines. I did several events for them to commemorate the event. One thing was to draw all of the employees from our local airline hub. This is probably the most faces I’ve tried to squeeze into one drawing. I was pretty happy with how they all turned out. I hear it went over well with the crew.

My favorite part from these gigs, was getting to go behind the scenes at the airports. Its like a whole otherworld back there. Pretty cool!

Wedding Proposal

One of the cool things about being a caricature artist is that you get to be a part of special events in people’s lives. In this case, I was hired to do a caricature proposal for Richard, and then posed as a live caricature artist at my friends art gallery. When Richard and his fiance’ arrived, I was pretending to draw my wife’s caricature, and asked if they’d like to get theirs done. After 10 minutes or so of pretending to sketch them, and about asking how they’d met, and so on, I pulled this drawing out for them. She had no idea. She said yes. It was special.

Kids Caricatures

I’ve been super busy lately with freelance work and doing comics. This is an illustration I did a while back for a kids kindergarten class. Kids have so much personality, ha! I really tried to put that into this drawing.

Lunch Sketches

I’m a little over halfway into this brown paper sketchbook. I’ve enjoyed working on midtone paper, but the size of the book is just a little bit too small. I tend to only put one to one and a 1/2 figures per page, which is a challenge for composing sketches together. I’m hoping that by the time I finish the book I’ll be more comfortable in this size format.

These are a few of my favorite lunch sketches from this week. I really like the first guy, I drew him tonight. I could really see the shapes on his face the moment he sat down. I love it when that happens.

Sketches April 2012

It has been a very busy month, but I’ve tried to squeeze in sketching whenever I can. I’m almost finished with this moleskin sketchbook. Probably 7 or 8 pages to go. After this I’m going to switch to a brown paper sketchbook, just to keep things fresh for me.

Lately, I’ve been drawing with red/blue pencils, and for some reason purple prisma color brushpen for outlining. On this page in particular, I’ve been smudging the purple to get shaded effects, and then go back over it with colored pencil, or greys to give it more depth. I’ve almost completely stopped using black ink for the last few weeks or so. Most of these were drawn at the Lubbock Comic Book Expo this past weekend.

People sketches

These are a few of my favorite sketches from the last week. I really enjoying sketching people now. Some of them are even starting to look like the people I’m drawing.

I don’t think this guy was as angry as he looks in this sketch. But he didn’t have a natural scowl. Like he was born with it on his face. It probably didn’t help that he was waiting in line at walmart.
