I will be in Dallas this weekend, for a bit of an inspirational respite/sabbatical. If you are a fan of Super Zeroes, or a webcomic artist in the DFW area, I would love to meet you. There will be two opportunities this weekend, hopefully you can make it out to at least one!

I’m getting a group of webcomics people together Saturday at Chipotle on 75 and Forest Lane in Dallas. We’ll be there from 7-10 probably. And Sunday night from 6:30-9:30 I’ll be at the Drink and Draw at the Flying Saucer. You can find more info for that on the drink and draw site HERE! I hope to see lots of awesome people this weekend. Hopefully you’ll be one of them!

I don’t know what these are. I can’t tell if they’re cute or creepy either. It’s just what I was in the mood to draw at the sketchnight tonight. They oddly remind me of my friend Nate Bramble’s art style, only completely different. Check out his comic if you get a chance. Great stuff!

Freebirds World Burrito

The Lubbock SketchClub is an art group I run here in town. We usually have a pretty good turn out of artists of all ages and skill levels. I really enjoy being a part of it. We’ve been very fortunate to have a place to meet every single week that is very supportive and conducive to our sketchy needs. Freebirds World Burritos. Where else can you make tin-foil sculptures and sketch in huge groups?!

I designed this flyer for our store, for an event they’re doing in a couple of weeks. If you’re in Lubbock, stop by from 1-5 on july 29th to sketch with us and check out the cars and bands. It should be a lot of fun!

I met a new artist at the sketchclub a couple of weeks ago named Derrick Fleece. He’s new to town and a terrific artist. I’ve really enjoyed drawing with him. I snagged one of his sketches the other day and started noodling with colors on it digitally in photoshop. I like how it turned out. We’re both huge fans of Brian Stelfreeze, so i tried to dabble in the masters color palette. Nobody does it like mr Freeze though.

Fortress Tree

My friend from Denmark brought copies of one of his favorite European comics “Valhala” to the sketch night on Saturday. The series looks amazing… just wish I spoke Scandinavian. The artwork was gorgeous and I could have drawn from it all night. I picked this fortress tree to sketch out. My tablet is busted so I used the mouse to add a little bit of tone to the ink drawing. I’d like to do more with it.

the Witch Queen

the Sketchnight was good tonight. We had a few new people and a good amount of regulars, and even a few old friends from when the sketchclub first started 3 years ago. I got to sketch most of the time, which is nice. I’ve been making myself do that a lot more the last month. Its too easy as the guy in charge to get taken over with playing host to everyone.

Here is one of the sketches I did tonight. This might make a good rough sketch for a finished painting. I’ll see if I have free time this week to do something like that. I wandered through this one, so there’s a lot that I don’t like about it. But overall I am happy with the result. I hope everyone else had a good time at the sketchnight too!

This was pen and ink, with a bit of wash from the waterbrush. I added a little white with the white out pen, and shifted the colors to purple in photoshop to make it a little more interesting.

Collaboration Sketches

Here are a couple of collaboration sketches I did at the sketchnight last night with my friend David Hilburn. He drew them and I did watercolors over them. I love the way David draws trees and cartoon characters. I especially love the way he inks. I’ve learned a lot the last year from him.

I want to thank Steve Wood, Brian Little and Brandon Adkins for putting together an amazing show. Also, to everyone in the Sketch Club that displayed their art, and created “silent panel” comics for everyone to draw on. They were a huge hit! And I really want to thank Mark and Leanne and Hard Tops for being such wonderful hosts. We are very blessed to be welcomed into their gallery each year. And we hope that we can continue to put on a great show. This years show “Sequential Possibilities” was fantastic. We broke the attendance records for the Hard Tops gallery. We had more than 700-750 visitors to the gallery. And its one of the busiest venue usually on the art trail. So it was good stuff.
