I’m getting a group of webcomics people together Saturday at Chipotle on 75 and Forest Lane in Dallas. We’ll be there from 7-10 probably. And Sunday night from 6:30-9:30 I’ll be at the Drink and Draw at the Flying Saucer. You can find more info for that on the drink and draw site HERE! I hope to see lots of awesome people this weekend. I can’t believe this is our 4th year doing this show!  When we started this in 2008 there had never really been a strong comic book convention in this region, and we didn’t think it would last.  But fans come from all around, and we’ve seen more and more attendees each year, and this year, we have more creators coming from out of town than ever before.  I’m very excited about this show, especially since after last year, I wasn’t sure we’d get to have another one.

I hope that anyone checking this out, that lives close enough to drive, will come out and say Hi!  I will be there with nearly everyone else from the Robot Cowboy studio!  It’s going to be a great show!

I don’t know what these are.  I can’t tell if they’re cute or creepy either.  It’s just what I was in the mood to draw at the sketchnight tonight.   They oddly remind me of my friend Nate Bramble’s art style, only completely different.  Check out his comic if you get a chance.  Great stuff!

Several of my friends from the Lubbock Sketch Club and from around town got together and pitched in to buy me a new drawing tablet to replace my old one that has been hurting my feelings for nigh on two years now.  It was a complete surprise and a real blessing.  Its a new Wacom Intuos 4 tablet.  My old one was a 3.  I didn’t even know they had 4′s out yet.  Its pretty awesome, with a lot more short cut buttons and a touch ring that works as both a zoom, and can toggle through several other convenient options.  Its really amazing.

Its been kind of rough month.  But all of a sudden, I’m with a new laptop, with all new adobe suite, and a new drawing tablet.  I’m really looking forward to diving 2010!

So this is my first official digital sketch with the new tablet.  Amber is really into UFO’s and aliens right now, so I guess this drawing came out of that somehow.  I think he’s cute. This was about an hour in Photoshop.

Figure Drawing Group last night was good.  My friend Jenn was the model, dressed as a Flamenco dancer.  I wanted to keep the art loose so I grabbed my jar of dirty ink water and used it to do washes.  I forgot my blow-dryer though so the washes weren’t as graceful as I would like.  It was still fun to do.   My thanks to Robert who’s running the figure drawing group now for keeping things interesting and keeping it going.  Its much appreciated.

I forget though, just how out of sorts it can seem for people to draw in public. Normally I sit off to the side where no one really notices, but last night we were on the isle and dozens of people were walking past and whispering and coming back to talk to us. Lol. I still think drawing from life in public is one of the best ways to develop your craft. It does take experience though to get used to the attention it sometimes brings. I’ve drawn thousands of caricatures in my career, with all sorts of crowds, so I’ve learned to work a room. But if you’re just starting out, just remember that to most people anything more than a stick figure is something to be admired, so drawing, at whatever skill level you’re at is worth sharing. Just remember to smile and have fun.
