Old Wolverine

My Wife Amber and I are starting to do warm-up sketches together in the studio. Today’s theme was Old Wolverine. We may do a whole series of elderly super hero characters before moving on to something else. Check out Amber’s site to see her take on Old Wolverine.

I drew this with a much thinner pen than I’m used to, and it ended up looking like a Skottie Young drawing. I love his stuff! I decided to go ahead and experiment with adding textures and muted colors to go all out with it. I think he turned out alright.

I’m not accustomed to drawing Super Heroes. But some of my friends do it all the time. Every so often it rubs of on me and I get to sketching. Usually they don’t turn out like anything I care to post for people to see. But this Cap sketch I did the other day while hanging out with my friend Derrick turned out pretty good. I added a bit of color to it and here we are.

Hulk – SKETCH!

This sketch has been sitting in my watercolor sketch book for a couple of months. I hated this sketch because… well it looked weird to me. I like sketches like that because I have no problem reworking them. I’ll splash paint all over it and not care if it looks any better. In this case it ended up looking a lot better. Not “professional” better by any means, but I at least don’t want to tear it out of the book anymore. One of these days I’m going to sit down and actually try to do a hulk painting that might look professional. Most of the time I’m just spitting them out because I had the green paint handy. Hulk deserves better than that, don’t you Hulk?

EDIT: hmmm… now that I look at it again… this looks more like Hulks awkward high school year-book photo. Lol.

Spiderman in the City

It was a beautiful day today. Gorgeous thunderstorms woke me up early and got me into the studio to work. Lots of amazing clouds, and the most breathtaking sunset I’ve seen in ages. And even the smell tonight reminded me of the best of summer. It was a good day.

I felt exhausted though at work. I started sketching this spidey to let my creativity get out a little before doing some grunt work. The city scape is actually a partial view from our studio window. Its nice having rooftop reference like that just outside the window. (Especially here in Lubbock, Lol!)

Batman – digital sketch

We had some guests in the comic book studio today. My friend Jenn Q brought a couple of the foster kids that she’s working with, up to hang out with us some and draw. We had a good time. I know for me I had a very complicated childhood, but I can only imagine what some of these kids have been through, and what they’re still going through. So I’m glad we got to brighten their week a little and give them some ideas on what their talent can do.

I was doing a digital sketch of some sort of alien thing when they came in, but they wanted to see Batman, so the sketch quickly became the Dark Knight. I finished it up after they left. I think he turned out pretty good. I’ve never been all that great at drawing Batman. So I’m pretty stoked that it looked like him.

Marvel Comics' Electra!

I spent about half my workday today messing around on the Cintiq at the studio. Such a nice little machine. I tried out Manga Studio for the first time today. Its a lot better than I expected. It was pretty easy to use, other than a few backwards shortkeys and such. It was really great for pencil sketching. And surprisingly good at inking. I did all the B/W for this sketch in that program. I’m really thinking of doing more of my gruntwork with that. I switched over to color Electra in photoshop. I am still having trouble converting colors from the Mac to my PC at home. I suppose it would just be easier to get internet at the studio. But then I would have the internet… and nothing would ever get done.

Spiderman and Venom – Watercolor Sketch

I had fun at the Abilene show yesterday hanging out with my friends from the Lubbock Sketchclub, and getting to hang with the Abilene SketchClub guys some too. Dinner was great! Other than that, it was a decent show, but I didn’t make much money at all. I was surprised actually. Just about everyone I talked to had the same experience. Lots of people showed, but very few spent money. It was probably because it was a charity event. I’m glad I went though.

I spent the last few hours doing this watercolor sketch of Spiderman and Venom. I think its a good rough sketch for a finished painting. Some of that anatomy is just really wonky on both characters. but I like some of the paint effects I was getting and I really want to try a full painting version.
