Zatoichi the blind samurai
I’m a huge fan of samurai movies. Yojimbo, lone wolf and cub, but Zatoichi is my favorite. I did this sketch while watching one of the many many great Zatoichi movies.

Old Wolverine
My Wife Amber and I are starting to do warm-up sketches together in the studio. Today’s theme was Old Wolverine. We may do a whole series of elderly super hero characters before moving on to something else. Check out Amber’s site to see her take on Old Wolverine.
I drew this with a much thinner pen than I’m used to, and it ended up looking like a Skottie Young drawing. I love his stuff! I decided to go ahead and experiment with adding textures and muted colors to go all out with it. I think he turned out alright.

Commissions!
the Adventures of Kate Beaton's lost comic…
I Love Kate Beaton’s comics! And you should too! I am totally inspired by her ability to quickly jot out little stories and make them so immensely entertaining. Her love and passion for History is equally inspiring. Go to her site now and read everything she does. You won’t regret it. This comic is my take on the sad story of her lost comic. This is how I imagine it went down. Its also partially referencing one of her other short comics about a little girl that lost her balloons. I now want to draw lots of short sketchy comics.

Dead @ 17 pin-up

I went to Dallas Comic Con a few weeks ago with my wife to see some friends and talk with artists I know in the industry. Truth be told, I was really just getting out of town. Deadlines have been tight the last few months and it seems like I’ve been working non-stop. Occasionally that makes me sluggish and I need a break just to recharge. I’ve never been to DCC before, but it was packed! I guess without Wizard World Texas in the Dallas area anymore, people are looking for something to fill that gap. I’ve heard recently they’re going to be moving to a larger location, so hopefully that works out, and I’ll be exhibiting there sometime down the road.
While there, I wanted to do some fanart for Josh Howard, who does the comic Dead @ 17. Josh was a guest at our convention here in Lubbock last November, and it was great getting to pick his brain about his process and the industry itself (we don’t get a lot of chance for that out in West Texas). Anyways, the sketch was fun, I wish I’d had time to paint it, but I only had a couple of hours to spare before the trip.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Leonardo
Lunch sketch from a couple of weeks ago. No it wasn’t pizza, dude. I went to to grab a bite to eat with Syd, one of my Robot Cowboy studio-mates. He was working on a pretty nice TMNT sketch of all four of the turtles, and I thought I’d take my try at it. I like how he turned out. I like drawing turtles. You don’t have to have a strong grasp of drawing knees or elbows. Makes things easier.

Hellboy digital sketch

This has been a bit of a stressful week. Still have a lot to do. I did this quick digital sketch of Hellboy to blow off some steam after the Sketch night tonight. It was about 30 minutes in photoshop.

Hermit Hill
Well, this was fan art for one of my favorite Webcomics, Hermit Hill, but it looks like I’m a little late to the party. He’s putting closing the book on the comic after two years. It was fun while it lasted. Thanks for making us laugh Nate!

Darth Vader – returns
This likeness turned out a little better for Mr Vader I think. though I still see lots of room for improvement. Whats weird is that I thought I lost this one several times because I over-inked the thing, but was somehow able to bring it back in the painting process. Its funny how that works. I almost never scrap drawings now, because I know if I’m patient with them, eventually they’ll come out alright.
I’m going to try a few more portraits if I have time outside my freelance work. After a handful of those, I might try for an actual “Star Wars” style illustration, the way Drew Struzen makes it look so effortless. Till then, I’m having fun practicing.
