These are some older sketches from back in September. I think I was waiting on a friend, who happened to be at a Magic: the Gathering tournament. Lots of interesting characters to draw. I’m not sure why that one guy had a medal ribbon around his neck. But he sure seemed pretty proud of it.

People sketches

Posted by admin On October - 27 - 2011

These are a few of my favorite sketches from the last week. I really enjoying sketching people now. Some of them are even starting to look like the people I’m drawing.

I don’t think this guy was as angry as he looks in this sketch. But he didn’t have a natural scowl. Like he was born with it on his face. It probably didn’t help that he was waiting in line at walmart.

Pierre Alary – Sinbad

Posted by admin On October - 19 - 2011

I’ve been falling in  Love with French Comics more and more the last few years. I especially love Pierre Alary’s work. Pierre is a former Disney France artist, but with a wicked line work added into his terrific compositions and animated designs. He was a student of the incredible “les Gobelins” animation school in Paris (so jealous!) And has been doing comics mostly for the last few years. I fell in love with his “Belladonne” art before I even knew who he was. I’d find little snippets on the internet and try to hunt down more every where that I could. Now I try to import nearly every thing I can get a hold of.

Recently, I’ve been trying to reproduce his line work, below are a few examples from his more recent Sinbad books. These are exact copies (or as close as I could get) of some of his drawings.  Its really helped me tighten up my details, while also loosening up on my overall drawings. I have a tendency to get really really rigid with my face shapes, but Pierre doesn’t seem to even care. He’s got such great design work. And the lines are just the candy on top.

I highly recommend checking out his work if you can track it down!

Walmart Sketches – 10/15/2011

Posted by admin On October - 17 - 2011

It was a bit slow sketching at Walmart this weekend. Not that there weren’t plenty of amazing wildlife to draw from… in fact it seemed quite the opposite. These are a few choice sketches from our recent outing. The colored pencils didn’t scan too well.

Amber and I decided to do flying Hippopottermuses as our warm-up sketch this morning. I think he’s cute. Amber’s turned out CUTE as well.

Old man and the Ice Cream

Posted by admin On October - 7 - 2011

This Joyful old soul was partaking in an icecream desert at Jason’s Deli last week. You can really see how excited he is about the sweet concoction.
This is not my best ever attempt at digital painting. Sometimes I forget how to do things, like paint in a computer.

Zatoichi the blind samurai

Posted by admin On October - 6 - 2011

I’m a huge fan of samurai movies. Yojimbo, lone wolf and cub, but Zatoichi is my favorite. I did this sketch while watching one of the many many great Zatoichi movies.

the complete package

We were sketching at the local rest-o-rant when this fine fellow in supremely tight clothing sauntered past. The image was burned in my brain, the sketch quickly followed.
