sunclouds

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 31 - 2009

Amber and I went to see “UP” today. It was an absolutely fantastic movie! I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was funny, deep, and very touching. A beautiful movie!

Afterwords we went to the park to sketch and spend a little time together before the week. This is one sketch I ended up liking. I turned back to look on the path to see if there was a nice composition, and just as I did the sun broke through the edge of the clouds and I was mesmerized. This is my feeble attempt to capture that.

Little boy with little dog in a little red wagon.

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 29 - 2009

Amber and I went for ice cream after dinner tonight, and saw this kid walking past with a little red wagon, Puppy not included.    I thought it was such an adorable image I decided to do a quick sketch of it.  Its definitely starting to be summertime.

Batman – digital sketch

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 29 - 2009

We had some guests in the comic book studio today.   My friend Jenn Q brought a couple of the  foster kids that she’s working with, up to hang out with us some and draw.  We had a good time.  I know for me I had a very complicated childhood, but I can only imagine what some of these kids have been through, and what they’re still going through.  So I’m glad we got to brighten their week a little and give them some ideas on what their talent can do.

I was doing a digital sketch of some sort of alien thing when they came in, but they wanted to see Batman, so the sketch quickly became the Dark Knight.  I finished it up after they left.  I think he turned out pretty good.  I’ve never been all that great at drawing Batman.  So I’m pretty stoked that it looked like him.

daily sketches – construction workers

Lunchtime sketches today sitting at Georgios downtown watching them tear up the bricks on Broadway ave.  Construction workers are fun to draw.  I will do more of it I think.

Marvel Comics' Electra!

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 26 - 2009

I spent about half my workday today messing around on the Cintiq at the studio.  Such a nice little machine.  I tried out Manga Studio for the first time today.  Its a lot better than I expected.  It was pretty easy to use, other than a few backwards shortkeys and such.  It was really great for pencil sketching.  And surprisingly good at inking.  I did all the B/W for this sketch in that program.  I’m really thinking of doing more of my gruntwork with that.  I switched over to color Electra in photoshop.  I am still having trouble converting colors from the Mac to my PC at home.  I suppose it would just be easier to get internet at the studio.  But then I would have the internet… and nothing would ever get done.

Robotic kind – watercolor with pen and ink

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 24 - 2009

I started sketching this last night.  I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, so I find myself doing these little sketches just to let my mind wander around the page till something comes out of it.  I ended up finishing this up at the sketchnight tonight with watercolors and white out.

girl – digital sketch

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 22 - 2009

I came into the studio last night and one of my studio mates Syd, had brought up his Cintique for us to use.  I gave it a whirl, its pretty good.  Definitely something I could get used to.  I think the colors need to be set on it though, because every other monitor I looked at this on the sketch looked way too dark and too red.  This was about 25 minutes in photoshop.

West Texas Drawlins

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 21 - 2009

I love living in West Texas.  Some people don’t much care for it, but I really do.  Part of the reason is drawings like this.  I’d say that about half the people I meet are complete and total characters unto themselves.  They have no idea that they’re characters, which is the best part.  So more often than not you’ll find me in restaurants or coffee shops, even grocery stores and the local walmart… just sketching away trying to capture these characters in my sketchbook.  Its one of my favorite pastimes.  I’ve been meaning to start posting more of these here.  I guess this is as good a chance as any.

These sketches were done with red col erase pencil, and I added a little black to pop them out..

Indiana Jones tries again

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 21 - 2009

I did this Indy sketch a couple days ago in a desperate attempt to avoid being productive.  I wanted to try out a new greywash mixture I’d fixed up, it had some really nice sedimant in it that added a good texture.  He looks really young in this sketch.  And I really messed up his nose.  But the likeness is getting better than some of the other attempts I’ve made with Indy.  Maybe one of these days I’ll get what I’m going for.

Lady and the BlackLagooner prisma marker tag-team sketch

Posted by WillTerrell On May - 20 - 2009

My friend Steve Wood drew this killer sketch at a sketchnight a while back.  I went over it with Prisma markers to demonstrate how they blend, and to show how to add some darks for contrast into his coloring technique.  The result was something pretty cool.  He’s a fantastic cartoonist, and it was really fun being able to work over his drawing.  I’d like to do more stuff like that.

He’s working on a blog right now, I’ll post a link whenever he gets it running.
